The Friendly
Home building, located at
5767 Côte St. Antoine Road
(corner of
Draper) in Notre Dame de
Grace, is the Head
Office of The Isaiah 40
Foundation, and has served many
and varied Christian
organizations
over the years.
It was built
in 1919 by the Wesley
Methodist Church to serve
both as a Sunday School and
as a church until provision
could be made for the
latter. In 1925, Church
Union was accomplished and
Wesley Methodist Church
became Wesley United. In
1927, the church moved to
its new building nearby. In
1931, the Sunday School also
moved out and Draper Hall,
as it was then known, was
sold to the Militia who made
a firing range in the
basement. It was later sold
to the Boy Scouts and then
to the Christian Brethren,
again as a Sunday School. |

In 1959,
Draper Hall was sold to The
Friendly Home for Young
Women and Babies. This
organization for unwed
mothers and their babies was
begun in 1912 by Miss Hannah
Smith and Mrs. Edith Dougall
as "The Friendly Bible
Class" in rented rooms on
Richmond Square.
In 1915, with
support from Welcome Hall
Mission, "The Friendly Home
for Girls" was set up in a
small house on Cathedral
Street. As larger premises
were required, the Friendly
Home moved to St. Antoine
Street West, to St. Mark
Street, and then in 1921 to
2284-2290 Dorchester Street
West, its location for
almost forty years. |

|
From 1950 to
1975 the Superintendents of
The Friendly Home were Mr.
and Mrs. Harold and Olive
Roulson. At Easter, 1960,
The Friendly Home moved into
Draper Hall. The spare lot
was asphalted and turned
into a play-yard for the
children; the shooting range
was converted into a long
garage; the basement became
a play area; classrooms
became storerooms and
laundry rooms.
Over the
years, hundreds of children
were cared for at The
Friendly Home and very many
were adopted. |
In 2001, the Board of The Friendly
Home transferred ownership of the building to The
Isaiah 40 Foundation to serve as its headquarters.

Isaiah
40 Quiet Garden |
"Come with me
by yourselves to a quiet place
and get some rest." Mark 6:31

The Isaiah 40 Quiet Garden allows us
to draw apart to a quiet place for a while and rest
in God. The garden is open to all and enables clients to reflect
quietly before or after counselling.
The primary vision of the
Quiet Garden Movement is to initiate and
resource a network of local opportunities for
prayer, silence, reflection and the appreciation of
beauty; for learning about Christian life and
spirituality; and for experiencing creativity and
healing in the context of God's love.
